Anyone figured out how to install unsigned software on the latest firmware using a different method. This method no longer works.

Would prefer to use the newest firmware....

Leo - Do this - go into your Installations folder, and open the App Manager. Now press options, settings, and change the first option to 'All'. That should allow you to install most any application that is signed, such as X-Plore. You can follow the directions on this site to 'hack' your phone to allow unsigned applications, as well.

The Euro version of the Nokia E71 recieved a firmware update a few weeks ago, bringing the device up to v110.07.127, but at that time, the NAM version, with US 3G, was left out in the cold. I'm pleased to let you know, however, that the E71-2 NAM has now received this firmware update, through Nokia's Software Updater application.

The new firmware is the same version that the Euro one received, which also tells us that the changelog is going to be the same. There are new versions of Nokia Email, Nokia Maps, and Mail 4 Exchange, as well as a few bugfixes here and there.

It should be noted that this new firmware eliminates the ability for you to 'hack' your phone, using the process we described earlier here at E71Blog.com. If you're using MagicKey, you may want to hold off for a bit, or look into Smartphoneware's Tracker application. Also, the Nokia E71 does *not* have UDP (User Data Preservation), so it's suggested that you backup any important information before applying the update.

You can download NSU here.

Ok, after 3 days I finally sorted out the connection problem on my E71.

I reinstalled the new firmware (110.07.127). Ran Sett.wizard, selecting MMS, Internet and Wap. This will automatically install the correct settings from your SP to your phone. The phone is now connecting to the internet.

NB. DO NOT restore phone contents from the backup file to your phone using Nokia PC Suite. It seems that the phone settings in the backup file is not compatible with the new firmware. If you do, you will have the dreaded "Connection not available" again.

Instead of wasting your time looking for a "fix" on the internet, spend the time to reinstall all your applications and setup your phone like it used to be, without making use of the restore file.

Nokia E71-1(42)

After the update I cannot connect to the internet. "Connection not available". That goes for WLAN connection too. Nokia care line also unable to assist. They recommend I take the phone to a Nokia Repair Centre.

Requested network settings from my SP. The sms they send you which you are supposed to "Save" is now in an "Unsupported Format" after the update.

My SP informs me that it is a Firmware Network problem as my E71 is unable to recognize G3 networks and therefore cannot connect to the internet. No MMS either.

Over at Symbian-Guru.com, they've discovered a new application called Octrotalk that actually supports carrier-agnostic video calling from your Nokia E71 to any other phone using the application (which includes S60v3 and Windows Mobile). You can use either 3G or WiFi, which means that this is the first carrier-agnostic video calling application to hit the market!

Octrotalk is free, but currently in beta for S60 phones, so you'll need to enter your IMEI here in order to be added to the beta list. Once you've done that, simply choose the Create a new Octrotalk.net Account option, and then create your new username/password. You'll also need to change the server to 'talk.octro.net', as seen in the screenshot below (from Symbian-Guru).

I'm still waiting on my IMEI to be added to the beta testers, but give it a run and see how it works for yourself. There's also an application for Windows-powered computers, so you can use your phone to video call someone's computer. This will be great for calling older relatives, as they can just leave the desktop application running all the time, and you can call them with video whenever you want!

This freeware application from LonelyCatGames allows you to connect to a number of different instant messaging protocols, including MSN/Windows Live, AIM, Yahoo!, Gtalk, and Jabber-based. I use it for MSN, Gtalk, and Nokia Chat and it works awesome, and can use either cellular data or WiFi.

The last few updates brought support for themes, so that the application will match whatever theme you happen to be using on your phone. You can, of course, still select one of the default LonelyCatGames color schemes, though I've always found them a bit ugly, myself.

When you first install SlickIM, you're presented with a screen listing out the various IM protocols. Simply click on each one you wish to use, and enter your details. It's really just that easy. You can view your buddy list in any number of ways, such as grouped by protocol, or alphabetized. You can also opt to hide offline contacts, if you want.

When you have multiple chat windows open, they're presented as a tabbed interface, allowing you to easily see all of the conversations that you have open, and switching between them is a breeze. Smilies are supported, as you might expect, and there's even a handy notification that shows up on whatever screen you're in. With this, even if you're browsing the internet, if someone IM's you, a little box appears in the top corner of your display, so that you can easily swap back to SlickIM to carry on the conversation.

You can download the latest version of SlickIM here. What's even better is that, if a new version is released, the application can automatically check for you, and then download and install the updated version! It's fantastic!

One of the things that annoys me about S60 is that the over-the-air Sync app (which uses SyncML) doesn't allow you to schedule syncs. You have to manually go into the application and press options -> Synchronize to get anything to happen. Well, not anymore.

Introducing, Swim, for S60. This freeware basically lets you tell it how often the application should automatically open your Sync app, press options, and then press Synchronize. That's all it does, and yet it's so useful.

You still need to have your Sync profile setup in the Sync menu, for instance if you use Sync on Ovi or GooSync or any other SyncML-based service. Once you have the profile setup, you simply open Swim, and tell it how often you'd like it to synchronize your stuff. You can set it for a number of hours, once a day, or even once a week. Whatever you'd like, and then you're done. This awesome little app does the rest, and beautifully.

Please note, that Swim is currently available only as an unsigned application. It *is*, however, compatible with OpenSigned, so if you've recently updated the firmware on your E71, or if you just don't want to go through the hacking bit I told you about earlier, you can still easily use Swim, and for free.

Note also that Swim uses your phone's data connection (unless of course you set it to use WiFi). I'm not responsible if you forget this and run up a huge data bill on your cell phone.

Download Swim here.

(via: Symbian-Guru)

admin on "HOW TO: Browse Better Thanks To MagicKey"

One of the things that I wish about my E71 is that the volume keys could pull double-duty to scroll in the web browser. It would make browsing long webpages so much better! Well, I'm glad to let you know that, since we've learned how to install unsigned applications, this is now possible! Indeed, using an application called MagicKey, you can remap any button on your E71 (and other S60 phones) to behave like another button. Note that MagicKey can only duplicate buttons, it cannot remap a button to a new application.

You can download MagicKey here, and unfortunately, it doesn't work with OpenSigned, so you'll need to have performed the hack (detailed here) to be able to install it.

Once you've installed MagicKey, simply open the application. The first screen that you're presented with is the App List. From this screen, you can either add a keymap to the 'All Apps' list, or you can specify a certain application, such as the web browser. To add, press Options, Add, and then scroll through the list to find the Web application. You should now see this screen:

Now, press 'right' on the d-pad to swap to the KeyMap List tab. This is where you'll create a set of keymaps, and assign that set to the Web app that you just setup. Again, press Options, Add to create a new one, and you can name it whatever you like - I used 'Webkeymap'. Now, click on your newly created Keymap, and then click 'Add Key Pair'.

This is where it gets tricky, so pay attention. You should see a box asking for the original key. First, you need to press the 'Send' key, which will add '999' to the box. Now you can click on whatever button you want to remap. To remap the volume keys to scroll, you need to press the Send key, followed by the volume up key. You should see '162' in the box. Press OK, and you get another box asking for the Maps To: key. Again, press the Send button first, followed, this time, by the d-pad 'up', to get '16' in the box. Now press OK.

Repeat the process again, this time with the volume down and d-pad down keys. If you really want to have the best experience, I recommend also mapping the voice memo button to the center d-pad, so you can scroll and click, all from the side there. To do this, follow the steps above, but press the voice memo/center d-pad buttons.

Once you've created your KeyMaps, your screen should look like the one below. If it doesn't, erase them and do it again, making sure that you've got them in the right order. Now, click 'back' (right softkey) to get back to the first screen. With the 'Web' app highlighted, press options, and go to 'Choose Map'. Pick your newly created 'Webkeymap'. Now, again, click 'Options, but this time, choose 'Start on boot.' This way, everytime you turn your phone on, the keymap will be reloaded.

That's it! Now, you can easily open your web browser and scroll up and down using the volume keys on the side, and click on links using the voice memo key! How much better is that, and what's more, your volume keys revert to their original function when you exit the web! It's brilliant!

What other keymap combinations can you come up with?

admin on "How To: Hack Your E71 To Install Unsigned Applications"

One of the more frustrating things about S60 currently is the Symbian Signed initiative. Designed to eliminate malware and viruses on our phones, Symbian Signed is a great idea that was executed poorly. Developers became frustrated with the various testing procedures and requirements, and thus, have simply begun releasing their applications as 'unsigned'. This prevents a problem for users who wish to use these applications, but don't know how to sign applications.

Quite honestly, there are very few applications that I've found I need which are only available unsigned. For some, you can simply use the OpenSigned option to get a legitimately signed version for your phone. However, this doesn't work for all applications, and it also only 'signs' the application for a single IMEI - meaning if you have multiple phones, you have repeat the process for each one.

The other option is to simply 'hack' your phone to eliminate the Symbian Signed requirement. Please note that if you hose your phone doing this, we're not responsible. Also, it's been found that Nokia often 'fixes' the hack with firmware updates, so this is not a permanent solution. However, it works great on my E71 NAM, and doesn't cause any harm to the stability of the phone.

You'll need three files, which I've uploaded here in a ZIP that you can open right on your phone.

Now, you'll need to follow these steps *exactly*:

1. Transfer all 3 of the files to your phone's memory card. You can simply put them in the root, or you can create a 'Hack' folder, if you wish.
2. Install X-Plore
3. Open X-Plore, press Menu -> Tools -> Configuration. Check the first four boxes in this list, then click Back, then the Home key to minimize X-Plore.
4. Install the hellocarbide app
5. Run the hellocarbide application
6. Press Options and chose Menu1
7. Answer Yes (the right soft key)
8. The app will close.
9. Navigate to X-Plore (you will not be able to use the task manager, so you will need to press the Home key to get to your main menu, then go into the Installations folder)
10. Navigate in X-Plore to the installserver.exe file, and press Menu, Edit, Copy. Now, navigate to C:sysbin, and press the center d-pad to copy.
11. Reboot your phone, and you're good to go!

Now you can install *any* application, whether it's signed or not. Be careful, however, that you know the origins of the file. Installing *any* file could mess up your phone. Only install applications from trusted sources, such as E71Blog.com.

It's called Tankzors, and while it is a Java game, it's incredibly cool, and really addictive. It's pretty simply, really: you drive around (you're a tank) and blow stuff up. You sometimes have to blow up other tanks, and other times you have to blow up walls or other obstacles. Along the way you can pick up powerups, which can give you better guns or strong shields, too.

The gameplay consists of a series of missions, each one adding something different to the mix. Since most of the game is played using only the d-pad and the left and right softkeys, it works pretty well playing on the E71. Of course, the regular number keys offer shortcuts to various actions, but overall, it's a pretty easy game.

You can download Tankzors here for free, or you can just visit wap.tankzors.com from your phone. There's also a map editing tool available, if you're a bit more technical-minded and want to make your own maps.

There is a new firmware version available for the Nokia E71, v110.07.127. This update includes a newer version of Mail for Exchange, as well as an update to Nokia Maps. The camera has received some attention, and the browser and Bluetooth should be more stable, as well.

The firmware update is available through Nokia Software Updater, a Windows-only desktop application. You can download the latest version of NSU here.

Earlier this week, Nokia launched a killer new service called Friend View through its Beta Labs site. Nokia Friend View consists of a desktop website and a mobile client and allows you to visualize yourself and your friends on a map, facilitating meetups quite nicely. Friend View also allows you to post status updates, which your friends can comment on, creating a mobile social location-based microblogging service that's really fun to use!

You'll need to have a Nokia Account, which is the same username and password you currently use for Nokia Chat, Sync on Ovi, and Files on Ovi. However, unfortunately, your buddy list from Nokia Chat is not carried over to FriendView, so you're forced to re-find all of your contacts. You can check things out in 'What's Up' view, which shows a little window with the latest status messages from you and your contacts.

Overall, I'm rather impressed with Nokia Friend View on my Nokia E71. I've not used the application enough to be able to comment on battery usage, but with Friend View maintaining an active data connection and using a combination of GPS and Network-based location, I can imagine you'll notice a slight hit.

What do you think of this new service?

Dotsisx over at Symbian-Guru has started a new weekly focus, spotlighting a themer from the S60 community each Friday. This past Friday was one I hadn't heard of, DhanuSaud. I really like him cause he uses Flahorn's icon pack, which you may remember I go ga-ga over for my E71. DhanuSaud also uses SVG backgrounds, so that they look great no matter what size or orientation your phone's display is in - this also means they'll work great on the Nokia E71!

His best one, in my opinion, is called Alpha, and he's just updated it to fix a few text input fields that weren't working quite right. I've got the version with Flahorn icons loaded up on my E71, and as you can see, it even addresses those pesky GPS and Media folders! Brilliant!

There's no better way to start the week than with a fresh new theme for your phone, and today is no exception. I've come across Lithium, from PiZero, who has recently started using Flahorn's icon pack in his themes! Lithium is a blue-tinted theme that looks somewhat like the Matrix screens.

Unfortunately, Lithium doesn't replace all of the system folders on the E71, such as the GPS, Communication, and Office folders, as well as the Download! app. Other than that, the theme looks great, and nearly completely rids us once again of those horrific default icons.

You can download Lithium for free from PiZero's great looking new site here.

Most of you are probably rather disappointed with the gaming on your Nokia E71. Since it's not supported by N-Gage, and the landscape screen orientation makes finding good java games slightly difficult, I thought you'd be rather excited to find out that Quake is now available for your Nokia E71!

That's right, the age-old classic indeed runs on the Nokia E71, as you can see in this video below.

Mobbler has been updated, and now features the ability to both love and ban tracks, as well as the typical scrobbling and whatnot. The Symbian-Guru is a huge fan of Mobbler, and he's converted me, as well. You will need a free Last.FM account, which you can get here.

Basically, Last.FM keeps track of what you listen to across various devices and places, and then uses that to recommend new music to you, and connect you with other people with similar music tastes. There's also a great custom station option, which allows you to either type in an artist or a tag and get a streaming radio station customized around that artist/tag. Brilliant.

As you're listening, you can mark a track as 'loved', in which Last.FM keeps it in a special station that you can access by paying a subscription (you get other benefits, too). You can also 'ban' a track, informing Last.FM that you dislike it, and not to play it ever again. If you simply aren't into a track at that moment, you can just skip it, without having to mark it as banned.

The latest update to Mobbler allows you to use your phone's volume keys to adjust the audio volume, and works great, even over EDGE.

You can download Mobbler here, and set yourself up with a Last.FM account here.

Also, if you're into a specific station, the Nokia Internet Radio application has been updated with a special version for the E71, you can download that here.

Great questions, Jordy - for GPS, you can either use Nokia Maps, which is preinstalled on your E71, and simply press the '0' (zero) key to center the map on your current location.

You could also download Google Maps Mobile, which is free, and available here: www.google.com/gmm and use that to show your current location. Be aware that Google Maps Mobile will use your phone's data connection to download the map information.

Great question! From my experience, no. The reason is, the blue function key is what makes the phone recognize the difference in the letter or the number that's on the key.

Preset - cClock, according to that post, is currently unsigned. I'm working on putting together a walkthrough on how to bypass this requirement, but for now, you should check out LargeTime, which *is* signed, and gives you the same result:

Yes, JoikuSpot works great. The free one will get the job done, but you can also buy the premium version, which will allow for more secure connections. We'll have a highlight of JoikuSpot here on the site soon!

So, we've shown you a handful of fun themes for your new E71, and highlighted a few applications here and there. However, alot of you are reporting issues with installation, so I figured it would be good to put together a walkthrough of sorts.

First, the basics - your Nokia E71 is using S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1. You may also see this written as S60v3 FP1 in some places. This means you can install and use any application written for S60 3rd Edition. These themes and applications usually end with '.sisx' or just '.sis', and can be found all over the internet. My favorite place to get applications, though, is the S60.com website, which has a great Applications directory.

To install these applications and themes, you can simply Bluetooth the file to yourself, or store it on your phone's memory card, and use the File Explorer application to navigate to the file, and simply click on it to open. Installation will start immediately, and you're all set!

But wait, what if you get an error? There are 2 reasons you may get an error, with 2 very simple solutions. The first is if your phone is set to restrict the types of applications that can be installed, and the other has to do with the certificate used to sign the application or, more frequently, the theme.

The first thing you should check is to make sure that your phone is set to allow any application to be installed. To do this, you can go into your Installations folder, and open the 'App Manager'. Now press your left softkey to open the Options menu, and arrow down to 'Settings'. It's completely safe for you to change the first option (Software Installation) to 'All', instead of 'Signed Only'. Once you have done this, try to install the application or theme again.

If you are still having issues, it could be due to the expiration date of the certificate used to sign the theme or application. To resolve this, simply go into your Settings and change the date of your phone to 2007. Now, proceed with the installation again, and don't forget to change your clock back when you're done!

You should now be able to install nearly any application or theme on your phone without any issues, as long as it is a signed application. Unsigned applications are a bit different, and I'll cover a workaround for those soon.

First, I am having trouble figuring out the GPS ... the only thing I want to do is just see where I am now. That should be the simplest thing to do with a GPS device ... no routes, no directions, nothing - just show me where I am right now. How do I do this ?

Also, how do I get the GPS to go full screen ?

Secondly, is there a nice, simple symbian app that will display RSS feeds on my main screen for quick checking ? Whats the standard RSS feed app that people use on a symbian device, or specifically an e71 ?

Thanks.

Hello,

Is it possible to use my e71 as a cellular / wifi bridge ?

That is, the phone is on the internet with my mobile provider, and it is using its wifi radio to behave as an access point.

Then other computers/devices can connect to the Internet over the wifi connection that the e71 is providing.

Is this possible ?

Thanks.

got the E71, nice supplied pouch too.

Anyone have any good recommendations?

One of the common complaints against the Nokia E71, specifically among seasoned S60 vets, is the 2.5mm headset adapter that's built-in. Only 1mm too small for a standard earphone jack, this presents a problem for E71 lovers, as they must either settle with the poor quality of the bundled headphones, or seek out a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter.

Thanks to Jonathan Greene of Atmaspheric Endeavors (this guy finds all sorts of great stuff!), that search is made easier. It turns out, the JAVOedge 2.5mm to 3.5mm stereo adapter listed on Amazon as being for the Treo works great with the Nokia E71! This little accessory is also cheap, at $4 for a 2-pack, you'll have a spare adapter to keep in the car or in your travel bag!

Truphone uses your phone's WiFi or 3G data connection to place SIP calls (kinda like VOIP) at a much cheaper rate than your regular plan minutes, specifically when calling internationally. Calls to other Truphone customers are free, though.

Note that when you install Truphone, you'll get a popup message stating 'Application not compatible with phone,' asking if you'd like to continue anyways. It's reportedly safe to say 'yes', and rock on through the installation. The team at Truphone hopes to have an update to address this notification available soon.
