How To Eliminate Bloatware On The Nokia E71x

Many of you jumped on the E71 bandwagon for cheap, curtesy of AT&T and their E71x. Unfortunately, while you got a newer version of S60 3rd Edition, you were also ‘blessed’ with a boatload of bloatware, including game demos and other junk. Through normal methods, you can’t uninstall any of this, which is a darn shame.

Luckily, there’s a way for you to actually delete it from your phone, using a bit of behind-the-scenes trickery. First , though, you’ll need to download and install X-Plore, which is free, from LonelyCatGames. This file browser allows you a bit more access than the default one already installed on your phone. Once installed, open X-Plore and press Menu, Tools, Configuration. Now, check the box next to anything that says, ‘Show’.

Now, go back to the main screen of X-Plore, where it lists your drives (should show C:, D:, E:, and Z:) Navigate to Z:/system/data/midp2/preinstall, and you’ll find a whole list of files, which should all correspond to the various bloatware apps. Here’s a handy list:

  • an529-piranha-js179.jar (AT&T Navigator)
  • app-prod-where-E71.jar (Where)
  • BrainChallengeVol2DEMONokiaE71EN… (Brain Challenge)
  • DEMOCollapseUnitedStatesNOKIAE71… (Collapse)
  • mall.jar (MEdia Mall 2.0)
  • MobileBanking.jar (Mobile Banking)
  • MobiTVNokiaE71ATTTrialen… (MobiTV)
  • MobiVJNokiaE71ATTTrialen… (MobiVJ)
  • Monopoly.jar (Monopoly)
  • MusicID4.0.2Nokiaxxx (MusicID/Shazam)
  • mycast5demoacte71.jar (My-Cast Weather)
  • remixNokiaE71x.jar (ReMix)
  • wikimobile.jar (WikiMobile)
  • wpt2attnoke71… (WPT Hold Em 2)
  • wvim5en-USes… (Instant Messenger)
  • XM-RadioNokiaE71ATTTrial… (XM Radio)
  • ypcpiranha_submit.jar (Yellow Pages)

To remove an application (you’ll need to do this one-by-one), highlight the file, then press the left softkey. Navigate to File, Open By System, and it will start to install the application. When it asks where you want to install it, choose your memory card, and let it install there. Once you’ve done that with all of the apps that you want to remove, simply remove the memory card from your phone and format it using your computer.

Now you can enjoy your E71x without having to hassle with all of AT&T’s bloatware! You should also notice a small increase in internal storage, as well.

I just wanna know if this is now worth purchasing? I’m stuck between this and waiting to see how the palm pre will turn out…Sprint is cheaper than AT&T which makes it a hard decision.

Thanks for great work. I would like to know that after you uninstall all junk software from AT&T, how about the icons in the main screen (AT&T Nav for example) and other places. Are they still there or they will be removed also.
    Thanks.

OK. I got the answer by myself. All icons will disappear when you delete all installed files in the memory card. The only tiny problem is that you will have two clock icons in your main screen. But that’s no problem for me.

I know a lot of people are wondering so if you could add this to your blog I’m sure tons of users will find it useful. Especially after they remove said bloatware.

HOW TO CHANGE HOME SCREEN ICONS ON E71X:

    Menu > Settings > Config.> General > Personalization > Idle screen mode > Shortcuts

*Shortcuts 1-6 correspond to the 6 icons you have on the home screen.

If you have 2 clock icons on the home screen then just replace it.
    Menu–>Settings–>Config.–>General–>Personalization–>
–>Idle Screen Mode–>Shortcuts, now change the shortcuts in there.

E71x have restrictions to install applications, it may want to check certificates online.
To disable this, go to Menu>Config.>Applications>App. manager, and change the “Online certification check” to “Off”.

I’ve had the E71 for a while now. NOT better than an iPhone but also NOT a prisoner of AT&T’s price gouging. Works for me.

I downloaded and installed Xplore, and it works OK. I went into configuration to “show” hidden drives etc, and can see the Z: drive. It has a DATA folder as mentioned, but no MIDP2 subfolder. Can’t find the bloatware apps to delete as a result. Oh heck.
