So, as you’ve likely seen, the Nokia E71 NAM has now received this latest firmware update, v200.21.118. As you’ve also likely gathered, it’s only for the 0559585 product code, while the 0569371 product code is languishing behind with the older v100 firmware. Ricky Cadden, the Symbian Guru, quotes his contact as saying that the 0569371 is a country variant, and the 0559585 is the vanilla product code, hence the difference.
If you don’t really care what product code you have, but are frustrated with being stuck with old firmware, worry not – here’s a quick walkthrough on how you can easily change the product code on your Nokia E71 to the 0559585 one, to get timely firmware updates.
Please note that ‘officially’, changing the product code voids your warranty. However, with this tutorial you could easily change it back, should you need any warranty work done, so don’t sweat it. Also, you’ll probably want to start out with a freshly hard reset E71. You can do this by pressing *#7370 from the standby screen. Please note that hard resetting your phone will erase EVERYTHING you have stored on it (your memory card, however, is safe). You should backup any important information before proceeding. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE.
Now, you’ll want to download NSS, also known as Nemesis Service Suite. You can get this here: Nemesis Service Suite. You’ll want to install that on your computer before continuing. It should work just fine in either Windows XP or Vista, but I wouldn’t suggest using NSS in a virtual machine, such as VMware or similar.
Here’s the steps:
1. Connect your E71 to your computer with the USB cord, and put it in ‘PC Suite’ mode.
2. Launch NSS, and click on the little magnifying glass in the top right corner of the window. This should find your phone and display some information about it.
3. Now, click on the ‘Phone Info’ button, and wait a minute for it to read your phone’s information. You should now click on the ‘Read’ button to have the various fields filled in with the appropriate information.
4. Now, click on the Product Code entry field, and change it to 0559585, check the ‘Enable’ box, and then click on ‘Write’.
Your product code has now been changed. You can disconnect your phone, and then reconnect and follow steps 1-3 again to verify, if you wish. Now, you can run the regular Nokia Software Update to get the latest firmware for your phone.
You don’t have to worry about forgetting what the original Product Code was for your phone, because it’s printed on the label underneath the battery. Should you need warranty work done, simply follow these steps, but use the old product code instead.

All these product code are for E71-1 ?
Is this firmware for NAM (i.e. supports North American HSDPA / 3G)?
My Canadian Rogers branded E71-2 has product code 0574792. If I update to this firmware, is the phone unlocked too?
The product codes listed in the post are for the E71-2, which has NAM 3G (850/1900MHz). However, the process will work on other variants (and even other S60 phones), but you *must* use the proper product codes. Using a Euro E71 product code on a NAM E71, for instance, would brick the phone.
@cdne71 – Using the vanilla product code would remove the Rogers branding, but would *not* remove the SIM lock. Your phone would be unbranded, but not unlocked. The only way that you can currently unlock the E71 is by getting a code, either from Nokia or from Rogers.
I REALLY want to do this, but I use MagicKey for several of my apps…
Is there a way to backup the existing (Rogers) firmware in case it needs to be reverted (e.g. for warranty)?
ok i got a problem. after resetting, i did the NSS thing. After re-writing i launched NSS again to double check. When I try to read values, it says “Reading values… Error!”
I went ahead to update anyway but it says no update available :s
help?
Great info!
And what about localization, wouldn’t it be lost? For example, my E71 is localized with Russian language, and when i update it with this new 2.0 firmware, will Russian input still persist?
Will the product code mess my Finnish keyboard layout? I’ve heard stories of people using e.g. Danish product codes only to have their keyboard layout to swap to a Danish one.
Thank you for your posting, you have saved my day. I have successfully changed my product code from 0560656 (Indonesia) to 0567045 (EURO 1) using NSS and finally I could update the firmware to V200 and it works just fine. Thanks for your valuable information.
)
Anyone can explain me to which code to switch from my german code ( 0569287) so I can update to v200?
And I wish to retain my german QWERTZ keyboard layout^^
@Christoph Wagner: You can see the list of product code here http://nokiae71.wordpress.com/2008/08/04/product-codes-for-e71/
I think you can use 0558785, however I am not 100% sure. Don’t blame me if it doesn’t work, just a suggestion…good luck!
Sweet!
Firmware update is now available for Product code 0566235 in India! Go get it people
Well I got a devcert so I can sign apps — now that I can sign MagicKey I did the update.
So far so good, but really not a whole lot of change. HOWEVER… I did tend to “reformat” my phone a lot when it slowed down, and I can say that the menu system is by far faster than it was before. It used to load the menus quickly, but I could still see it fill out the “list” of menu options (especially on the settings page). It now fills them out instantly. New themes are decent, but I still installed Steel Black (the original with the red color).
I do miss my startup animation though… it was a BIOS boot screen imitation that I made, filled out to show the accurate details of the E71hardware =)
I’ll be looking forward to being able to get to the C:\SYS folder again to put that back on!
I downloaded the NSS and followed all the steps, why the NSS can’t detect my E71? When I clicked on the magnifier icon, the dialog box was empty? Anything wrong with the NSS?
I’m scared!
@RASTA: Thanks!
All in all it seems like a bad idea to change codes to update if you got a localized keyboard. From digging through some boards it seems it messes up the keyboard layout almost always.
Thank you! I followed your tutorial and updated to firmware 200.21.118
I am with Kenny Ng:
I followed the directions and it cannot see my phone:
I installed nss and chose virtual usb option, connected my e71 via PC Suite connection, launched nss, clicked on the magnifying glass, clicked on phone info and …… nothing.
Can anybody help?
Hello,
I used this: 0561088 number to make update. But, I had a problem. Update stopped (at around 45%) while downloading firmware from nokia to my pc .
I had to wait 10 min and phone started automaticaly. Now is working fine but I think that upgrade did not complete 100%. First, letters Z and Y are replaced and german writing language is “fixed”. I can not use english keyboard any more. I can see new theme, software version by typing *#0000#.
Now, when I want to make new upgrade, I open upgrade manager and he tells me that there is new version (200.21.11
but I have it already installed.
I would like to have english version of this firmware where is english keyboard.
Which number I have to use?
Thank You soo much!!
@Christoph Wagner
I understand your worries: I had my german keyboard messed up, but then I have changed to 0558785 an I then could reinstall the new firmware. Now everything works just fine! German keyboard layout included.
So: don’t worry about the keyboard layout with the above mentioned code.
thanks… i just successfully updated my e71-2 to the new 200.21.118 firmware. (i had the 0569371 product code and had to change it via nss)
a couple of tips:
-when installing nss, you have to choose the first option (virtual usb drive).
-you should restart your phone after you successfully change your product code. (i tried using the nokia software updater right after i changed the product code and it couldn’t read anything from the phone)
Hello every one. I just got my E71 from Canadian Rogers Wireless, it’s
100.07.76
08-06-2008
RM-357
Nokia E71-2(330.03)
and, I am wondering if I can change it to Russian (0553619 EURO K1 RU GREY STEEL) if it is right. So, i just want to make sure that everything is fine, and my phone will work after that. As I understand it will be unlocked from Rogers as well, and could be used with any SIM card in any country (because E71 is 850/900/1800/1900 band phone). Just want to make sure if it is going to work right???!!!
Hi
Just got my O2 E7-1 and update the FW to 200.21.118 using the product code workaround. It was 0573884 and I used 0559585.
All is okay except the Home Page in Active mode is blank and the menu behaves a little strange ie. you need to do options/exit to get back. It works fine in Basic mode.
Anyone else had this or an idea how to fix it without taking it back and sticking with v100 until its available using the normal product ID or doing a complete reset?
Cheers
Hello everyone…
I have 3 important points for everyone here….
There is a lot of buzz on the net about the firmware updates…(Especially for the USA and Canada: NAM).
I just order a new E71-2 NAM from buy.com (Pittsburgh, PA USA, will arrive in 2 days hopefully) and i have done enough googling and other searches to understand that the firmw. updates are only for earlier production devices. if you got the update directly from Nokia, with out messing with the Product Code, this means your mobile was in the first production batch for your country. For USA, (where i reside now), if you have any product code earlier than 0569371, (which is a serial combination number, for different batches) you will find an update. If it is 0569371 or higher, you will not see any firmware update through NSU. Why? Because Nokia, has updated their software during the later product batches.
Second point ( bare with me its for the sake of all E71 lovers), if you are too tempted to make an update, although your NSU doesn’t show one for your product code, you will have to understand that:
Each update is directed to a specific HW\SW combination of a given phone. Nokia has parts from many different suppliers, and virtually no 2 devices are the same. At least from country to country. For instance, in the US, Nokia uses too different Wifi modules parts, with slightly different specifications. That’s because Nokia has many parts manufacturedin in different firms and contracts with different supplying companies… The point is, if you update your device with another device firmware your putting “wrong info” in you’re mobile, no matter how the update seems making it “perform better”. This is why, no updates experiences or reviews, i have come across on the net, where 100% satisfactory…
Another important factor, is that most people, will restore their backed up content from the old firmware content, (which also contains OS files) to the newly updated phone. Making a part of their E71 file system to be corrupt, which leads to freezes, lags, and performance issues. A user should only restore backed up contacts, calendar and images\gallery, and never restore previous applications. Also, the firmware is designed for specific keyboard layout, some users have reported to have different letters for text inputs than what they would usually have. (Spanish versions mostly, for Mexico)…
3rd point, it is always advisable to go through updates, step by step, and not jumping from one release to the n+2 release without getting the n+1 version first.i.e try to get v110 then v200 instead of jumping directly to v200. Why? Because Nokia or Symbian OS releases are mainly incremental and not additional. (Some of the updates are intended to fix previous updates…and so on…). And i am amazed how Nokia doesn’t enforce it, where users can update freely, with disregard to what version they had already, since the product code can be changed easily.
In sum, an update is a serious thing, and most of us are serious users that torture our devices and take them to their design edges, but that never means that we don’t treat them well. We are getting the value of our money, and the benefit of the device….Don’t mess up your phones, just because you want that new version on your mobile screen. If your baby was drastically bugged, or behaving constantly bad, then send it back to Nokia….Switching back to the previous firmware is not easy, if not possible in the first place…..
Thanks for this great Blog!
Cheers and take care people…

Hi
I´m using a mid-east E71 with the product code 0566976. Can I just punch the Danish product code into NSS and write it to the phone and thereby making danish-language available?
Cheers
Hi, I change the product code to 0559585, I star the NSU, download the new firmware, but when starts to actualize a error legend appears :phone disconected, and so on so I can´t actualize.
HELP ME PLEASE
Best Regards
Juan Martin
NSS + NSU questions:
1.How many times can I change different firmwares?
2. Can move from one firmware to another w/o upgrading (keeping the same version but changing product codes / localities)?
Situation: I was impressed enough to buy an unlocked e71 from Newegg (Code #0569371 firmware #100.07.76) after “testing and returning” one from Rogers (Code #0574792 firmware #100.07.76).
Ironically, I’m interested in some of the apps that were cooked on the Rogers branded firmware (such as Clearmode’s Java based MobileMail not found anywhere for download, but required for Fido’s $5/mo unlimited email).
Now that we’ve established that “branding” does not mean “locking”, can I can change brands of the same FW version?
Despite that an update finally became available for 0569371, can someone answer the above?
I bought my e71 from ebay and it came with the produce code 0569371, thus no updates. I changed the product code to 0559585 and received from v200 update going from v100. And wow, battery life and speed increase, more functions and nothing have gone wrong. I doubt that anything WILL go wrong because I’m pretty active with the symbian forums, constantly installing and trying new programs then uninstalling and so if nothing has ‘bricked’ my phone with this firmware yet, I doubt anything will.
However, I will be changing the product code back to my previous after nokia decides to release the firmware to be on the safe side.
Thanks!
toy: you just wrote: “I’m pretty active with the symbian forums”
no disrespect, but if that were the case you would have learned (i.e. from this very blog’s homepage) that NSU has released a new v200 update for your product code – over a week ago!
Anyhow, I take the answer is NO to my previous post, unless someone can prove otherwise.
Jesus! That sh*t just bricked my phone! HANDS OFF!
hooray! New software update available for product code 0567050 ( UK ) from v200.21.118 to v210.21.006. Your phone does not have to be unlocked either. just finished updating. Have not tested the handset yet,
fingers crossed.

Hello,
Question to all of you. I am from The Netherlands, I have a Vodafone branded e71 (so I can not update the firmware). The product code is: 0572070 and it is a E71-1 model, type RM-346.
Can somebody tell me if I can change this code so I can update. Also, the phone is SIMlocked. I know changing the firmware doesn’t do anything about that, but will it be of any influence?
Thanks!
I bought a cellphone E71-2 RM-357 product code: 0569371. I would like to change it to language PT-BR. I found a product code 0567859 RM-407. Does someone know if is it ok ? Can I do this change ?
Changing the RM-XXX number is not a good idea.
What do you sugest ? Should I find a product code for RM-357 ? Do you Know ?
Thanx a lot bro! Respekt!
Arjen, my dad had an E66 vodafone branded E66. He just payed somethin like 30 euros for decoding and now its working great with his t-mobile sim
I’m sure that now I can upgrade his firmware.. but no use for him really
I have E71-1 bought it in INDIA and I am using in usa with at&t but i am not getting 3g service. I tried manually change but I am not getting signal. E71-1 RM-346 Product code 0566235 and I have firmware 210.21.006. Please anybody can help me on this Issue? What should I do with phone, so I can use for at&t 3g service. Thanks
I followed these settings and works perfectly. One problem is that when people call, the name display doesn’t show. I’m on Fido with an unlocked Rogers E71. My unlocked N82 showed the name (who’s not on my phone book) when somebody called. Is this a problem with the product code I used or does the network provider have to reset my Name and Caller ID settings? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. I had no contacts to begin with so it has nothing to do with the double entry contacts problem. Thanks!
I also followed the procedure and it went fairly smooth updating my E71. Unfortunately it was not get unlocked. Still under Rogers. Any advice?
It doesn´t matter if you change your product code back. Device itself logs changes of product code.
Nokia E71-3 (rm-407) Unbranded brazilian version: 0567859
updating to v200 now, was on Telecom NZ branded firmware. using product code 0567859 and installing update now
Fine, thank you. I could only update my E71-1 with the new v300.21.012 firmware with product code 0558796 listed here instead of my 0564692. No kickbacks yet…
Hello. I have a nokia E71 bought from UK on the internet and i am from Cyprus. The phone does not support my language(Greek) and i like to know if is possible to add the Greek somehow the code is 0569999 and is unlock.
Thanks in advance
Theodoros
At first it didn’t work but after uninstalling Nokia pc suite (but keeping the usb drivers) the programm worked. Also I found another product key on another website which worked!! Thanks for the explanation. I now have the newest sofware
Kind regards,
Naomi
Hi! I followed these steps, at the start I was having same problems as some where it was saying “Reading Error” you have to ensure that all PC Suite Software are closed including the hidden ones on the toolbar in Windows. If this still does not help close NSS unplug phone, replug phone and relaunch NSS and that should work
I just wanted to ask though. I initially had an E71-1 broke it and bought an E71-3; changed the product code on the latter to change it to generic software and backed it up using the E71-1’s old backup…is there a problem with this? It didn’t change the software or anything and any old network software included in my E71-1 was erasable eg. Vodafone access points whereas originally on my E71-1 it was locked and you were unable to erase it.
Lastly I’ve got this weird number as my Manufacture date something along the lines of 52.13452 is this normal? Where can I find the Original manufacture date of my phone in case I need to revert it to original settings or will it just work once I put the old Product code in? TIA
Thanks!!
I initially had heaps of dramas with Windows 7 Enterprise NSS Would never sync or scan!! However I installed a VMware mounted XP downloaded the old Nokia PC suite 6. and now it scans successfully!!!!!
