In the Download! application on your Nokia E71, you’ll likely find an application called SmartConnect. This is a brilliant application that Nokia has hooked us E71 owners up with for free that makes it easy to setup Access Point priority groups! However, the installation is a bit tricky, so here’s what to do:
First up, you want to go into your Application Manager, options, settings, and make sure the ‘online certificate checking’ is set to ‘on’. This will allow the SmartConnect application to check to verify that you have an E71 and that you should get the app for free. This is a very important step – if you don’t allow it to check for a license, the application will install, but whenever you try to use the access point, you’ll get a nasty message that it’s not licensed.
Now, after the installation, you’ll be prompted to reboot your phone, and then you can setup your access points. This is especially cool if you have multiple WiFi networks (work, home, etc), as you can give them a priority, followed by your cellular data connection, if they’re not found. You can name your new SmartConnect access point anything you’d like, and it will show up as an access point to all of your applications.
In real life, when you go to use that access point, say in the browser, the SmartConnect application will try the different access points that you have configured, in the order you’ve placed them. That means, it can try all of your WiFi hotspots before automatically falling back to cellular, without needing you to prompt it repeatedly! Brilliant.
NOTE: If you installed the application and are still having the ‘No License’ issue, you need to uninstall the application, and then open your File Browser. Navigate to the drive that you installed the application to (either phone memory or your memory card) and find the ‘Other’ folder. Inside, there should be a ‘Birdstep’ folder – delete that. Now, reboot your phone, go into the Download! app, click options – refresh content. Make sure that you’ve enabled online certificate checking, and then you can reinstall SmartConnect from your Download! app, and it should automatically ask if it can get online to verify your certificate.
Enjoy the new simplified access point feature, now!

I agree, SmartConnect is a life saver. I have been using SmartConnect with Devicescape to manage all my WiFi and Cellular data connections.
I use Devicescape to manage the WiFi connections so that I do not have to add them manually on my phone every time I update of format the phone.
In SmartConnect, I have given first priority to Devicescape AP which searches all my WiFi connects and then defaults to my providers data connection.
This has been a life saver especially for MailForExchange!!
Happy Holidays!
Hello
Does it constantly try to connect to the first choice, for example if you have two connection points, home network and cellular data and you are connected to email via home network, and leave your home network to go out (which is above celluar data), when you return will it connect to your home network or keep with celluar data?
Thanks
Sam
@sam – You need to set the option “On Better Connection” to “Disconnect”. It does take some time, but it automatically switches over to the WiFi connection if one is found in range and only falls back on cellular data when none is available.
I have been using this app on my E71 and i find it really handy. I have the same problem sam posted. for instance i would be browsing the web or listening to last fm via mobbler when coming home and i check my data connection and it is still connected to my cellular provider’s network. And how do i get devicescape? thanks
Devicescape can be downloaded from the Download Catalog. It shows up as Easy WiFi in your Downloads.
when creating a group which includes a wap connection, Smart Connect just doesn’t work. It works fine with Internet type connections . Anyone seeing a similar problem ?
Just upgraded from E61 to E71 due to knackered joystick. No access groups, and i can’t see SmartConnect in Downloads! either.
Can anyone help! it is a T-Mobile branded E71 on T-Mobile UK.
Thanks.
I second the problem with WAP points (Tzone) it screws up the ports somehow.
The definition used by SmartConnect is a little odd. For example, if you already have an existing cellular data connection, it will use it even if you are within wifi range. This may be a deal breaker for me since I use cellular data for push email as that consumes far less power and doesn’t require much bandwidth.
Oops, i typo’d. The previous message should have said: The definition for “Best Connection” used by …
Thanks man, i need it, i install and all perfect!!..
Greetings!!
I am still having the “no license” issue despite following the remedial instructions. This is for a E90 though. Any pointers to get SmartConnect working on my phone will be much appreciated. Thanks.
