Over at Symbian-Guru.com, they’ve discovered a new application called Octrotalk that actually supports carrier-agnostic video calling from your Nokia E71 to any other phone using the application (which includes S60v3 and Windows Mobile). You can use either 3G or WiFi, which means that this is the first carrier-agnostic video calling application to hit the market!
Octrotalk is free, but currently in beta for S60 phones, so you’ll need to enter your IMEI here in order to be added to the beta list. Once you’ve done that, simply choose the Create a new Octrotalk.net Account option, and then create your new username/password. You’ll also need to change the server to ‘talk.octro.net’, as seen in the screenshot below (from Symbian-Guru).
I’m still waiting on my IMEI to be added to the beta testers, but give it a run and see how it works for yourself. There’s also an application for Windows-powered computers, so you can use your phone to video call someone’s computer. This will be great for calling older relatives, as they can just leave the desktop application running all the time, and you can call them with video whenever you want!
